In this class students will learn about what makes a simple novel so good—and potentially so important and enduring, using the Harry Potter series as a reference. Students will then apply this new knowledge in their own writing to create a short story based on a magical school of their own design. Throughout this class, students will learn about the Latin roots behind the magic spells, explore the mythology behind magical creatures, be introduced to some of the real historical inspirations of some of the characters.

Through our programs we aim to help children develop: Responsibility, self-respect, curiosity for learning and an eye for caring for others.

Students develop a fundamental understanding of probability and statistics through fun activities and real word examples. Students will work with both first-hand and second-hand data. They will to conduct experiments and surveys. They will also obtain data from newspapers and journals. Using the data, they will generate graphs, charts, and tables to discover patters, draw conclusions and make predictions.

To spend or to save? Creating a budget — and sticking to it — can be a challenge for a household or a business, but also for California or the United States government. In this weeklong course, students will experience how to measure income and revenue, anticipate costs, and end with a net gain. Each day will focus on a different budget challenge, from the individual level to the national level, allowing students to apply their knowledge of tradeoffs and the benefits of saving to a multitude of scenarios. This course is a great follow-up to ‘Money Sense’ from the InGenius Grades 3-4 program.

Welcome detectives. In this course we are going to look at some of the same techniques that are used by the law enforcement to look at the physical evidence collected at a crime scene and taken from suspects. Some of the focuses will be on DNA Analysis, Metal Analysis, Liquid Analysis, Chromatography and Crime Scene Analysis!

It is in this shadow that science fiction has grown and evolved. It was and is our way to imagine a life and time beyond where we are now. Over the years sci-fi has adapted to our ever changing world, growing and adapting. Whether it includes robots, space exploration, aliens, or traveling through time, science fiction remains a gateway for our imagination. This course is for students that have a desire to study and create their own brand of science fiction.

Students develop and improve their graphic design skills while mastering professional design tools. Students develop the skills necessary to research and compose digital image projects. They are encouraged to be creative, but are also taught to think of each project as a concise statement of artistic, documentary, and/or journalistic intent.

We will teach Computer Science through games and puzzles with cards, string, crayons and lots of running around. These activities will introduce students to Computational Thinking through concepts such as binary numbers, algorithms and data compression. Importantly, no coding is needed.

This is an introductory one-week class for students who plan to participate in USACO contests.
